Only the educated are free.
– Epictetus

In the ever evolving world we live in it seems like every field and every aspect of life are being disrupted by the emerging technologies and the internet. But is it really so? A recurring topic here at The Refinement Club is education and learning. How is technology and the internet changing how we share and obtain knowledge? The required knowledge to become a well educated mind haven't changed in the post-Berners-Lee era, but how we acquire that knowledge is beginning to change. Maybe the best example of this is Kahn Academy with their extensive video library and practice exercises. The Khan Academy is a not-for-profit organization with the goal of changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education to anyone anywhere. The content haven't changed, but the format has. Kahn Academy is democratizing the way we learn by reinventing how to teach and how to learn.

Coursera is also an interesting way of bringing the class room to the web, and expanding the campus to the whole world. As well as all the different classes from a broad selection of universities on iTunes U.

All this is great initiative which broadens the reach for the education institutions and gives the knowledge-hungry a vast amount of high quality knowledge to tap into. But it's still the same age old way of learning, only a little bit more lonely. How can we make use of all this great content and take it one step further?

Learning by doing

In school most of what you learn is fairly abstract, there's mostly theoretical knowledge being exchanged and it's hard to grasp what this knowledge actually could be used for. Experimenting and learning by doing is powerful tools to get the key insight and obtain hands-on experience with the things you're learning. Either it's physics, mathematics or art. Embrace the inner maker.

Take a look at this amazing talk by Bret Victor about inventing on principle.

Codecademy is a really good example of learning by doing. Where you learn the basic of the coding language JavaScript by being guided through tasks and assignment in a friendly coding environment in your browser.

Rethinking the liberal arts

In the Middle Ages, the liberal arts were synonymous with introductory courses in branches of the sciences, mathematics, and in the study of writing. Some subsections of the liberal arts are trivium-the verbal arts- logic, grammar, and rhetoric, and quadrivium-the numerical arts- mathematics, geometry, music, and astronomy. Analyzing and interpreting information is also studied. Experience in Liberal Arts gives experience forming and expressing well rounded opinions.
– Wikipedia

Expertise are becoming the standard and what we strive for. Most of us live in intellectual silos where we hone our skills and exchange our thoughts and ideas with like minded people. The Internet is only enhancing this with its almost infinite amount of information and content to please your intellectual wants and needs.

Even though it's extremely important with experts and specialication in different fields of knowledge it is also very important to nourish and facilitate broader and more holistic knowledge. Give people the tools to cross-connect disciplines and become hybrids who can utilize their diversified knowledge to unlock the undiscovered.

So what is the modern version of the liberal arts? What does the modern wo/man need to know to be able to execute his or her ideas?

Life long learning

...the internet makes dumb people dumber and smart people smarter. If you don't know how to use it, or don't have the background to ask the right questions, you'll end up with a head full of nonsense. But if you do know how to use it, it's an endless wealth of information. Just as globalization and de-unionization have been major drivers of the growth of income inequality over the past few decades, the internet is now a major driver of the growth of cognitive inequality. Caveat emptor.
– Kevin Drum

The Internet is a perfect platform for life long learning, it's easy to find what you're looking for and learn more about your interests. This is good for honing your skills and your knowledge, but not so good for expanding your knowledge field. How can we facilitate lucky discoveries in knowledge and fields of interests? And how can we create new and interesting learning platforms which encourage life long learning?

Embrace the creative mind

To push forward and innovate we need creative minds. People who see the unexpected and connect the dots. We need to educate individuals who thinks on their own. People who use the knowledge they have acquired and remixes it to form totally new ideas. That is what will take us to the next level.

How can we encourage individuality and unleash people's inner creativity?

Degrees

How do we rank knowledge in the new era of education? Is your degree from an prestigious school relevant when the same knowledge and skills are freely available? Do we need to rethink how we rate and acknowledge skills and knowledge?

Start small, but think big

Be the change you want to see in the world.
– Gandhi

It's hard to change the education system and there will not be any radical revolution in the near future. The system will evolve and be shaped based on our ever evolving world. So what can we do? Basically we should start doing it our self. Make tools, services, clubs, movements etc which we as citizens can use to keep on learning. We should pave the path to help the next generation to learn and obtain knowledge and skills in a more intuitive way, to encourage exploration and cross disciplinary sharing and exploration.

The power is in our hands and the reward for a more refined education and learning regime are endless and extremely tasty.

Even in financially safe Norway. In countries where the unemployment rates are rising and welfare and pensions are being reduced, social currency can offer an alternative in peoples' daily life. An alternative that can create community and where investments are your assets, time and efforts, as well as your willingness to help out other people.

In Oslo the situation isn't so financially bleak, but most of us who live here can agree that our community feeling could improve. As anywhere else, there are people who live in financially challenging situation, but that doesn't mean they don't have something to contribute with. If you take money out of the equation what would happen?

There are many services that utilizes social currency, and peer to peer trading and interaction, to enhance, facilitate and create a community around their specific service. The most obvious example is Timebanking, where members earn credits for each hour they spend helping other members of the community. The members of Timebanks trade all kinds of services, like gardening, tutoring, child care, home repair, delivery and much more.

Another service which make use of this concept is Couchsurfing. No money changes hands, but the more good references you get, or the more you let people surf your couch, the more likely it is that people would want to have you as a couchsurfer.

We want to explore the whole concept of Social Currency with you, and specifically how we can bring it to our community here in Oslo. We hope you will join us for some interesting conversation! Bring a bit of cash if you'd like to have a few beers and hotdogs. See you at the Pop Up Hub!

It's about combining crowd-sourced information with the information you get from your bank about where you use your money. All to help you make more educated choices about how and what you spend money on.

When shopping you use the crowd-sourced information to make your choices. But to judge if a purchase is really a smart choice, you have to compare with what you already got. Filling out all that information is a big hurdle, so we think it should be done along the way. For example, if you're buying a pair of shoes, you'll be asked about how many shoes you already have. And in this way gradually building your inventory of all your possessions. Of course you can also at any time add items to your inventory.

Several banks are helping people get more control over their financial situation by automatically sorting people's purchases in different categories based on where they shop. This could be enhanced to show more information at the end of a month. By taking known information about corporations you can see if this is really who you want to buy stuff from. Ref. "Slavery Footprint". For example, in the last month you spent 2000 NOK at HM, the average lifespan of a HM garment is so and so long, they produce the clothes in this and this country where the workers are treated so and so. The crowd-sourced information regarding quality and people's opinion is included here as well.

So basically your buying habits are compared to your inventory of possessions and the quality of the items and the stuff you buy. In addition, how much impact the bought item has on the environment and the people that make it. The point of it is to help you learn over time, so that you can make better choices. It can also include tips like "it's time to clean up your closet and give some away to charity". Doing challenges like this should be rewarded and can be shared. So can your progress.

Could this help you to become more conscious of what you buy? Tell us what you think, share your ideas!

Visualizing Qualities of Consumer Goods

When you're buying or looking to buy a new item, clothing, equipment, gadget or what not, you seldom know if you're just paying for brand or quality, and as we talked about in our last post; how much impact the item you're buying has on the environment and how fair the trade is. Most of us are uninformed shoppers basing our choices on advertising and other peoples poor choices. It's time to get informed. It's time to know more about what we are buying.

Actually we found some invigorating ideas in the classic game, Diablo II; a lot of the game is based on finding items, weapons, armour, clothing, acessories etc. All these items vary in quality and the users can easily distinguish the different items and their qualites based on the color of the items name; grey for basic items, violet for magic items, yellow for rare items, orange for crafted items, green for set items, and gold for unique items. This gives the user easy overview of the quality of all the items scattered around the battlefield and he can easily pick up the items he finds worthy of his small pouch. When you have picked up an item in Diablo II you can also see all the items' attributes and how magical it is.

Wouldn't it be nice to have this in real life? To be able to see all the necessary meta data of one product, the durability, how repairable it is, the material used etc?

As we mentioned in our last post, this could be crowdsourced to begin with, and be founded on the same principle as Wikipedia. If you want to submit your experience to the wiki of a certain product you would also have to answer a bunch of questions that would contribute to that products' overall score. Or color if you will. Questions like "How long have you had this product", "has it ever needed repair" etc. This could be a resource site for people contemplating a certain purchase, but also be a guide while shopping. We're thinking an app that would be triggered by the barcode and show you what class the product in question belongs to. Is it a quality product? Is it a fair product? Is it animal friendly?

If you can get a crowdsourced service like this to be widely used, it can also influence producers and sellers to include and share more information, because it is in their best interest that the information that is out there is correct. The more information that is easily and pedagogically available to consumers, the more pressure there will be on producers of products that can't stand the scrutiny. If they want to keep selling, they would have to change.

By giving consumers information when and where they need it, and the opportunity to share information, they would be influenced to think more about the choices they make. We believe helping people make more conscious choices is an effective way to affect the rate of mass consumption.

Before Christmas we asked for ideas on how to make people more aware of how they consume, or on solutions that could help people consume less. In the time forward we will put these ideas in context and explore more around that topic.

A lot of you have probably checked out Slavery Footprint already, but for those of you haven't here's a quick description: Slavery Footprint seeks to make you more aware of how your consumption makes a global impact. You enter information about your eating habits and what you own of different things, and you get to find out how many slaves you have. But it doesn't stop by leaving you depressed, you are told what you can do to change it and you are given the means to do so. They have focused on making an app that lets you collect Free World points for taking action. Actions like contacting brands to encourage them to audit their supply chains and spreading information about modern slavery to your friends.

By raising awareness on how our consumption impacts the world and letting you know the naked truth about your spendings we can become more conscious and take action. Awareness is all good, but how can we also change our old habits and live a more conscious life?

Just one idea from the hip; a mobile application that lets you know the impact of a product, how many slaves, what's the CO2 footprint, how many kilometers has it traveled to get into your hands... The data could easily be crowdsourced and managed by the users and "stored" in the barcode of the product. It will give you the information needed to take a conscious choice while still satisfying your shopping needs. The app could also show you how your shopping actions evolve and encourage you to do good.

Slavery Footprint and their Free World app has focused on informing you about the impact your consumption has, and then encouraging you to start new habits. Habits that are about taking responsibility, and about taking action to influence corporations to change their ways and ultimately bring down the number of slaves in the world.

Another way to affect how we consume can be illustrated by the app The Eatery from Massive Health. They have developed a super easy way to help you eat more healthy. You track your food consumption by snapping a photo of everything you eat. Then you rate other people's food while you wait to get your own rating. You get instant feedback as well as development over time so you can track your progress and compete against your previous achievements. The interesting thing is that it actually makes you change. By taking photos of what you eat, it makes you become more conscious of what you eat. You start thinking "what could I make for dinner that would get a good rating?"

This mechanism could easily be used to make you change your shopping habits and reduce mass consumption. You could for example emulate The Eatery: start tracking your buying habits by snapping a picture of what you bought and letting other people rate your buying choice and let you know if it was a splurge or not. The app would track your progress and let you know how you perform compared to the other users. A simple, yet effective way of changing your shopping habits.

These are some thoughts we easily could expand upon and we sure will. Let us know if you got som ideas or thoughts. Unleash your ideas.

The Giftholder

This idea is contributed by Q&A, an ongoing one year project about graphic design which explore the profession through asking questions and answering them visually.
We wanted to address the issue of gift wrapping and the amount of paper wasted each Christmas. We worked out an alternative to the regular gift wrap; a reusable wrapping made of fabric. The idea is inspired by tote bags and sweaters. The fabric of the Giftholder is similair to a totebags, but in the shape of a one layered sweater and the size could vary depending on what you want to wrap. Say you have a small, medium and large one. The gift is then folded in to the sweater-shaped fabric, and then tied together with the "arms". You can either get the wrapping pre-designed, or you can use fabric-paint and add your own personal touch to it. One feature would be to wash the Giftholder, so it's fresh and clean for next year with different graphics ready to be added.

Our idea is designed to reduce the amount of gift wrapping that is being produced every year. Our intentions is not to stop the production of regular gift wrapping, but reduce it, and create awareness through a trend that reuses the same wrapping year after year.

You can either get a predesigned Giftholder, or you can buy blanks that are customizable.

Enough is Enough

Do a campaign based around comparing concepts of "Enough"

Like someone sitting at a dinner table saying "Enough! I've eaten too much!" with a child dying of starvation cause they don't have Enough to eat.

Someone saying "You can never have enough handbags!" with a ten year old saying "I wish i had enough time to sleep in between shifts at the handbag factory"

Had enough?(Picture of people sitting around a Thanksgiving table, loads of food leftover) She hasn't. (Picture of a child dying of starvation)

Haven't had enough? (Kid sitting looking pissed off at a hundred presents) She has (Picture of a kid working in a sweatshop)

You can do a social media campaign asking people to decide how much is enough for them, ask them to pledge anything over that to an individual who needs it. Like a kickstarter for small projects.

Tagline - Enough is Enough

#thirdworldproblems

Set up a Twitter account called thirdworldproblems, do a continuous search for #firstworldproblems - Target people tweeting about how good their life is, put their problem in the context of the third world.

EG

Needing to pee while someone is using the shower. #firstworldproblems

Needing to pee when there's no sanitation and my brother is dying of cholera #thirdworldproblems

Maths-Consumption

Do a series of short interactive videos that visually illustrate how much the items available for purchase online or the services you enjoy every day cost when averaged out mathematically.

Every bite of an apple you take is actually a hundred and five bites.

Ted the Giant

Make an iPad game/storybook for 8-11 year old kids about an Fairytale Kingdom called Daventry where the King and Queen can't have a child so they adopt a baby giant that was left on their doorstep called Ted.

Ted is a nice giant baby, beloved by the people of Daventry, but as Ted grows up, Daventry have to work to feed him more and more. This is where the game element comes in, you have to solve puzzles and manage resources to make sure that Ted gets fed, while not letting the farmers starve or the villagers to have their kids work 18 hour days in factories.

Years go by and Ted has spent his whole life being fed, he's become a lazy giant who never works and has become very spoilt. He eats and eats and eats, at this point the economy game is unwinnable without mass starvation and super poor quality of life for the villagers. Ted has become huge and fat and people in Daventry are starving to death and working 24 hours in horrible factories.

It's at this point where Ted then has to realise that he needs to start to work to support himself, because an economy that's totally focused on meeting the needs of one huge non-producing self centered consumer while marginalising the needs of the production base inevitably ends up in tragedy.

At this point, the player takes control of Ted, and uses his giant size and strength to help the villagers. He goes on a diet and eats only what he needs and works to feed himself. The story ends with a healthy looking Ted talking about knowing the difference between one person having too much at the expense of everyone and everyone having enough to be happy.
